Pen2Page Workshop: Fiction Writing @ USM Continuing Education
7 Wednesdays, April 9-May 21, 6-8:30PM, Fee: $195
The Story Workshop is a specific method that allows writers to move at their own pace in developing their perceptual, technical, and imaginative abilities throughout the fun and complex process of writing fiction.
Each week published work is read aloud. Then we go through a series of imaginative exercises beginning with word games, to impromptu tellings, to imagining a story place with characters and objects, to the telling of the story with coaching from the instructor. Everyone writes and what’s written in class is read aloud for class feedback.
Point-of-view, seeing-in-the-mind, gesture, audience, the writing process, and elements of scene will be emphasized so that writers can attempt to incorporate basic storytelling principles into their writing through reading, writing, listening, and telling their stories aloud. All exercises and activities are geared toward helping writers discover their oral and written voices and develop a better editorial sense of their work.
A minimum of 4-5 (double-spaced and typed) pages of writing will be due each session.

Ongoing Pen2Page Workshop Private Sessions
Advanced forms (such as folktales, monsters, story-within-a-story, opposites, structural and stylistic parodies) are explored in the move toward longer works of fiction, whether you’re moving toward a collection of short stories or a novel.
Plans are in process for workshops in Portland and Bath this summer. Locations and dates will be posted soon.
